Starbucks
and The Land of I Can
coming together to change the lives of children!
JULY 2001, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA. Starbucks, in collaboration
with The Land of I Can and the IAM Foundation, will be sponsoring
Frappuccino Day on September 22nd, 2001 at twenty-one stores across
San Diego County.
Proceeds
from every copy of The Land of I Can sold during the months of
July, August, and September as a result of this partnership will
be donated to the IAM Foundation, an organization "Gifting
Life Changing Books and Products to Children and Youth Worldwide".
This promotion culminates with Frappuccino Day on September 22nd,
2001 with book signings at several Starbucks locations. Events
will be held at each of the twenty-one Starbucks locations to
honor and encourage disadvantaged children.
The Land
of I Can in partnership with Starbucks and the IAM Foundation,
have made children their top priority. San Diego County has the
opportunity and challenge of meeting the needs of more than 739,000
young people. Our child population, which exceeds that of 21 states,
is projected to increase by 26 percent by the year 2003. Caring
for these children and youth must be our top priority. According
to recent statistics, there are more than 100,000 children living
in poverty in San Diego County alone.
The Land
of I Can is a perfect marriage for this event. What appears at
first glance to be a simple and beautiful book to touch and treasure
is soon discovered to hold a powerful message that can be read
quickly and repeatedly. The Land of I Can has become required
reading for many counselors, therapists and has made significant
changes in the lives of disabled, abused and neglected children
in the San Diego area.

Series
SAN DIEGO:
Susan Gilbert didn't just write "The Land of I Can";
she lives there. Her little fable of simple triumph, the basis
for a book and a whole series of motivational speeches, could
be modeled after her own lifeand has worked miracles for
others.
When Gilbert
lost both spouse and mother to cancerat age 25it
was the beginning of a powerful vision, a "gift to the
world" in the words of one reviewer (NAPRA Networker, Winter
2001)and a new career path as a "change catalyst."
Procrastination,
apathy, and self-pity are her enemies; in her speeches, writing,
and organizational consulting, she attacks them with a simple,
clear message: "Take one step."
Gilbert
"walks her talk." Not only did she build her life
back up, emotionally and financially, from the ruin of her loved
ones' deathsmoving across the country, working first as
a successful sales agent for a Fortune 500 company and then
starting a string of entrepreneurial venturesbut she has
also created a self-publishing success story.
The greatest
wisdoms come in small packages. So it is with The Land of
I Can.
--Neale Donald Walsch, Author, Conversations With God
The Land
of I Can, which Gilbert wrote and published, has sold over 1500
copies in the San Diego area aloneand it won't even be
officially released until September. By contrast, many self-published
authors are delighted to sell that many nationwide. The slim
hardcover book, beautifully illustrated (by Jill Holden) and
elegantly produced, has been a hit with those who work with
special needs children
people in recovery from abuse, injury,
or addiction..successful business executives
women re-entering
the workforce
and many others. One grandmother credits
the book with her abused grandson's strides against insomnia
and eating disorders (see enclosed letter).

Dear
I AM Foundation,
At
our February Council meeting, Mr. Viglione brought each person
in attendance a lovely book title, The Land of I Can. I would
like to share a story with you about the power of two people
this book has brought closer together. Its about Nathaniel
and his grandmother. Nathaniel is a boy, now eleven years
of age, who has lost his mother to drugs and mental illness,
and never knew his father, except to be abused by him. He
was born prematurely and as result of lung damage has breathing
and eating problems. He is in a special class at school, but
is very bright. He came to live with his grandmother two years
ago after she won his guardianship. His sleep was always disturbed
by nightmares of his abuse when his grandmother would hold
him tight and comfort him back to sleep.
The
very night his grandmother received the book, The Land of
I Can, they started to read it together. It filled the child
with hope and the belief that he can do what he really want
to. Something began to change just a little bit at a time.
Nathaniel was sleeping better and some nights he didnt
even wake up with a nightmare! Could it be the healing words
and pictures in this little book? Nathaniel has slept through
the night for three weeks in a row and is doing better in
school. He is even breathing better and needs less medication.
His appetite has increased and he has gained 3 pounds. Could
it be a coincidence that he began to feel better both in mind
and body the same day he began to read The Land of I Can?
Nathaniel and his grandmother think not. What do you think?
On
behalf of the families of children with special needs, The
East County Childrens Disability Council thanks you
for gifting our kids with life changing books.
Sincerely,
Janet Light

Before Official Release
SAN
DIEGO: There isn't usually much of a market for small-format
picture books aimed at both adults and childrenand
especially not from a first-time author whose book has a
price tag of $18.95.
Yet
The Land of I Can, written by Susan Gilbert and illustrated
by Jill Holden, has achieved advance sales in the author's
local market (San Diego) of over 1500 copies. After this
successful local test marketing, the book will go national
with its official September, 2001 release.
The
slim hardcover book, beautifully and elegantly produced,

successful

grandson's strides against insomnia and eating disorders
(documentation on request). Arming its readers against despair
and procrastination, its motivational message is that we
can achieve our goals, one step at a time.
The
book stems from Gilbert's own experience of taking charge
of her life after being emotionally and financially crushed
by the cancer deaths of her husband and mother in close
succession, when she was 25. She went on to start several
successful entrepreneurial ventures, most recently, her
publishing company, Unity Products and Press.
